Why is the number of Sindh Police less for the required security of local body elections?
It is being said on behalf of the Sindh provincial government that the number of Sindh police is less for the security of the standard set by the Election Commission of Pakistan for the local body elections.
In this regard, Inspector General Police Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon informed Geo News about the security arrangements and available personnel of Sindh Police.
According to Ghulam Nabi Memon, not a single polling station was cleared normally by the Provincial Election Commission of Pakistan in relation to the recent local elections of Sindh. In Hyderabad division, 1005 polling stations have been declared most sensitive while 2 thousand 874 polling stations have been declared sensitive. Thus, a total of 2 thousand 345 polling stations in Karachi and Hyderabad are the most sensitive while 6 thousand 532 are sensitive.
According to the Inspector General of Police Sindh, as per the SOP of the Election Commission of Pakistan, 8 officials are to be posted at the most sensitive polling stations and 4 at sensitive polling stations.
Ghulam Nabi Memon says that under this formula only 25 thousand 340 policemen are required in Karachi and 19 thousand 536 for Hyderabad and 44 thousand 876 policemen in total for posting at polling stations while for patrolling and other deployments in local government elections. Thousands of people are also needed.
He said that a total of 69 thousand 854 police personnel are required for the security of the local body elections, while the mandatory strength of Sindh police in the province is 19000.
