Under New York law, the maximum companies can be fined is $1.6 million, a penalty the Trump Organization can easily afford, and must be paid within 14 days.

Attorney General Joshua Stenglass asked New York District Court Judge Juan Merchan that the Trump Organization pay the maximum fine, though he admitted it would have "little impact" on the multibillion-dollar company.

"We all know these companies can't go to jail," Stenglass said Friday. "The only way to effectively deter such behavior is to make it as costly as possible."

Former President Donald Trump and his family were not charged in the case, but his name was repeatedly mentioned during the trial, by prosecutors, about his connection to untaxed benefits granted to some executives, including company-financed apartments and car leases. and personal expenses. One of the plaintiffs said Trump "explicitly authorized" the tax fraud.
